Brief History of the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials

Since its inception on the campus of Howard University in Washington DC, COMTO has continued to evolve to become the premier organization for the training, education and professional development of minority transportation professionals. From the advancement of Historically Underutilized Businesses (HUB’s), to legislative initiatives, scholarships and program opportunities – our scope is varied and far-reaching.

Who is COMTO Indiana?

In June of 2005, the Indianapolis Public Transportation Corporation (IndyGo) hosted an introductory meeting of the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO). Ms. Julie Cunningham, COMTO President and CEO, energized a group of more than two dozen attendees through a presentation of the history of minority involvement in the growth of the transportation industry and by sharing the organization’s purpose, evolution and accomplishments over the years. She invited Indianapolis and Indiana to consider developing a chapter to serve this region of the Midwest. Shortly after the meeting a group of ten founders formed a statewide chapter. The Indiana Chapter of COMTO was approved as an official chapter by the national organization in November of 2005. The Chapter became incorporated as COMTO Indiana, Inc. in March 2006.

COMTO Indiana Mission

To ensure a level playing field and maximum participation in the Indiana transportation industry for minority individuals, businesses and communities of color through advocacy, information sharing, training, educational and professional development.
